Legally Blonde

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

If anyone knows Skylar Holder, a few words most likely come to mind: insanely beautiful, blonde, hilarious, vibrant, animated, bold, faithful, & hard-working.

Not only does my sister contain these attributes, but moreover, she is also a successful law student at the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

While I admire my sister for many reasons, one of the more prominent reasons has been witnessing my sister advocate justice for others over the last few years.

Skylar exemplifies what it means to pursue a Juris Doctorate degree, not in the effort of earning an honorary title, but rather to zealously advocate in assisting others and to exemplify the legal professional's idea of public service.

However, Skylar has often been referred to humorously as “legally blonde” in pursuit of obtaining her degree. While this appears as a compliment to the legendary Elle Woods, played by the iconic Reese Witherspoon, Skylar has often felt a sense of inferiority as a result, tied to a comparison that perhaps is more harmful than beneficial.

Because of this, Skylar has chosen to lead her personal and professional life in a way that is reflective of this, choosing to rather embrace this aspect in her life and use these characteristics which she embodies to her advantage; embodying Ms. Wood’s most recited quote:

“You must always have faith in yourself” (Elle Woods)

Therefore, because of her experience perhaps not being taken seriously in a male-dominated field, Skylar has offered to give her top tips & tricks along the way of embracing self within your own selective, professional field:

1. Do not forget what made you “you” before you entered your career field.

It’s no secret that humans naturally want to conform/cater to the environment we are in. We do it every day, but I would encourage you to escape this reality in your career. Rather, hold onto that aspect of your life, who you are, & incorporate it into your career rather than fighting it.

2. Imposter syndrome is real for everyone, & I mean everyone.

Self-doubt and insecurities are real. However, it is important to not discount yourself because of them. If everyone was the same, having equal skills & talents, individuality would be lost. Don’t make yourself believe you are not valuable because your strengths AND weaknesses make you who you are. Knowing them and learning to adapt is key to success in your career.

3. Time management is crucial.

Ensuring that you prioritize what is important and more urgent when pursuing tasks is key to achieving productivity. Many individuals find themselves overwhelmed with the number of tasks that need to be accomplished day-to-day, therefore, managing and delegating such tasks are imperative in mitigating those overwhelming thoughts/tasks.

4. Find your people & YES, you will find them along the way.

Whenever you are placed in a new environment, it more often than not feels like a foreign land. The unfamiliarity to most is extremely intimidating and is only heightened when feelings of isolation or solitude begin creeping up. It is natural to have a discomforting feeling when placed in such situations, but remaining steadfast in knowing the unfamiliar will in due time become familiar and those who were once strangers turn to acquaintances and then friends is essential to understand along your career journey.

5. Never be embarrassed, ashamed, or intimidated for not being your authentic self—inside & outside of the classroom.

The amount of energy placed in concealing your truest self, if placed in embracing what makes you, will serve as the biggest advantage in life. You can only alter and change so much about yourself; trying to do so will only hinder what might be your greatest calling.

6. Cramming vs. Consistency

In law school, there is no such thing as cramming, rather consistency is key. The tasks and efforts which must be exercised in getting your work done each day are doable but imperative to be done every day.

7. Don't suffer in silence, and I promise you whatever you are feeling, many others feel the same & are going through their own tribulations.

At times when you might feel a sense of discouragement or struggle; leaning on those around you might not solve the issue but will inevitably make it more tolerable. Having friends in low places, high places, and all places will only add to your life.

8. Making time for your life outside your career could be the most beneficial thing for your career.

When a break is warranted and a pause from your studies or work is needed, choose to partake in activities that are beneficial and assist your well-being. These activities might include a quick workout at the gym, watching a favorite show, taking a walk, or getting some fresh air.

9. Quality over Quantity

In achieving success, one of the most important aspects is not in the outcome, but rather the journey itself and pursuit in getting to the end rather than the end goal itself. Choosing to be present and retain the knowledge in your long-term memory is key.

10. Do not compare yourself to others.

Regardless of the professional or personal path which each person pursues, no journey will be the same. Each person has a calling and that calling is achieved on different terms, time-frames, pit-stops, and mountain peaks along the way. The comparison of yours will always serve as a distraction from your path and will never help in ultimately achieving your goals.
